Blood pressure is calculated in ‘millimeters of mercury’ (mmHg) and is written as two numbers. For example, if the reading is 120/80mmHg, the blood pressure is ‘120 over 80’.

What do the numbers mean?

Two numbers or levels are presented in every blood pressure reading. They are shown as one number on the top of the other.

The first number or top number is the systolic blood pressure. Systolic blood pressure is the highest level the blood pressure which reaches when the heart beats.

The second number or bottom number is the diastolic blood pressure. Diastolic blood pressure is the lowest level the blood pressure which reaches as the heart relaxes between beats.

  • 140 over 90 (140/90) or higher (over a number of weeks): Blood pressure reading indicates having high blood pressure also known as hypertension. Lifestyle should be changed. Doctor or nurse should be consulted and any medicines suggested might be taken.

So:

  • If the number on top is 140 or more – then regardless of the bottom number, the blood pressure may be high.
  • If the bottom number is 90 or more – then regardless the top number, the blood pressure may be high.
  • If the top number is 90 or less – then regardless of the bottom number, the blood pressure may be low.
  • If the bottom number is 60 or less – regardless of the top number, the blood pressure might be low.
